There is a ‘new normal’ at MSL as we have introduced a number of new health and safety measures as a result of Covid-19. Our main aim during the current pandemic is to protect our workforce and to minimise the risk of spread of infection.
New signage has been introduced on MSL sites and in the MSL office as well as a number of hand sanitising stations. Our new policy advises that all MSL employees should wash their hands regularly and sanitise when passing any of the hand sanitising stations. Together with regular PPE requirements, our workforce have been asked to wear masks and gloves. On site all workers have new high-vis vests (pictured), each with print on the rear to remind all workers to keep a 2m distance when working.

MSL employees have been briefed on our new health and safety measures and have had opportunities to be involved in creating our new processes. We have asked all workers to remain vigilant and to ensure they are putting their own safety and the safety of others first.
Gerry Egan, Managing Director said; “The health and safety of our employees, clients and suppliers is of high importance to MSL as we adapt to our new way of working”.
Our new processes have been implemented in line with Scottish Government recommendations and will remain under continual review, as we navigate through the Scottish Government’s COVID-19 route map.

MSL are delighted to have become an accredited national living wage employer.
Gerry Egan, MSL Managing Director said; “At MSL we know that our greatest asset is our staff and we value each and every one of them. We believe that businesses that can afford to pay the living wage, should do so!”.
In 2016 the government introduced the national living wage, this was a higher rate of pay for over 25 year olds than what was considered the national minimum wage. The national living wage rates are higher because they are independently calculated based on what people need to get by as it recognised that not all workers can afford to meet the costs of living when getting paid the minimum wage.
Nearly 6,000 UK businesses pay the national living wage in place of the minimum wage. Like MSL these businesses believe their staff deserve a fair day’s pay for a hard day’s work.
Although paying our employees a rate of pay that is higher than the minimum wage is not new to MSL, we wanted to promise our current employees and future employees that our company will always pay at least the national living wage. Becoming an accredited national living wage employer has strengthened our promise and emphasised just how much we value our workers. We encourage all employers that can afford to do so, to pay the national living wage to ensure your employees earn a wage that meets the cost of living, not just the government minimum.

The process also provides the opportunity to review the impact of training undertaken in the previous year and provides an opportunity to suggest areas where there is potential improvement opportunity across the business.
Kathleen McLoughlin, Business Improvement Manager said “it is crucial that all of our employees have an opportunity to advance their own development. As a business we have a good reputation in terms of employing a skilled and competent workforce and we will continue to do so and ensure that we deliver on our key business objectives. MSL have recently employed two Business Support Modern Apprentices – welcome to MSL Jordan and Connor! These roles are new to the MSL organisational structure. As MSL continues to experience growth the MSL Management Team felt that the business would benefit from additional support in their busy office. Jordan and Connor will work closely with the Financial Operations Manager and Business Improvement Manager.
Both Modern Apprentices are working towards completing a SVQ. In the short time Jordan and Connor have been at MSL they have already completed fire marshal and first aid training; they have also attended a range of Business Gateway workshops which they found extremely beneficial to their roles. We are working closely with our chosen training provider SDS Consultancy https://sdconsultancy.org.uk/.
MSL are delighted to have added two new roles to our business structure. We have carefully planned our apprenticeship programme to include a range of training courses, to ensure a qualification is gained (SVQ) and to provide our apprentices the opportunity to experience working within different business areas and with different MSL managers whilst learning.
Managing Director Gerard Egan said “It has been great having Jordan and Connor join the MSL team, we are extremely impressed with their motivation and eagerness to learn. Both modern apprentices have settled into the team quickly and we feel they are already an asset to MSL”.

When asked what he enjoyed most about working at MSL Jordan responded “I enjoy having the opportunity to thrive at MSL. I feel valued and appreciate the company investing in me. The business has high standards and I feel already I have learned a great deal. There are lots of opportunities for me to develop and learn from each member of the team. I am made to feel like I belong at MSL and it is a great environment to work in”.
When asked the same question, Connor responded “My favourite thing about working at MSL is the diversity – no two days are ever the same, meaning every day is interesting and tasks do not become repetitive. I also love the team I work with, everyone is very friendly and supportive of each other and I think that is brilliant in a workplace for any employee, however I feel as an apprentice I have learned a massive amount from all of the staff here and feel comfortable asking questions. This is all down to their attitude and their willingness to invest time in us.”
Welcome to the MSL team Jordan and Connor!
